The State of Iowa Board of Education renewed the charter designation for Prescott Elementary School today, Thursday, March 6, at its meeting in Des Moines through the conclusion of the 2017-18 school year.

“The State Board of Education overwhelmingly affirmed our work and the impact Prescott has made on our students,” said Chris McCarron, principal of Prescott Elementary School, who was in Des Moines for the meeting. “We are excited to move forward in a way that enhances both the educational experience we provide and the student learning it fosters.”

Open to any student who resides in the Dubuque Community School District, Prescott delivers curriculum through an expeditionary-learning model that places heavy emphasis on experiential, problem-based learning with integration of the arts. The Dubuque Community School District received approval for Prescott’s charter in 2006 and it was renewed again in 2010. It is the only elementary charter school in Iowa.

“We are pleased to see Prescott’s charter renewed,” said Stan Rheingans, superintendent of schools. “We are committed to leading by example and using the charter umbrella to look at new and innovative ways to enhance instruction.”
