The Dubuque Community School District is pleased to announce the selection of three high school head coaches, pending School Board approval at its February 8 meeting.

Mike Hoskins has been named head football coach at Hempstead High School, Jordan Steuer has been named head boys soccer coach at Hempstead High School, and Coleman Heaney has been named head boys soccer coach at Dubuque Senior High School. In December, Sharon Klein was also named the head girls cross country coach at Hempstead. Each will take the reins of their teams after being assistant coaches in their programs.

“We are excited to welcome these coaches to new roles in their programs,” said Amy Hawkins, activities and athletics supervisor for the Dubuque Community School District. “We are confident that they will be a great addition to our programs and will work with our student-athletes to build skills and find success.”

Hoskins, currently the defensive and special teams coordinator for the Mustangs football team, brings over 30 years of coaching experience to the role. He is a previous head coach for Rockford College and assistant head coach at Southern Oregon University and Loras College.

A special education teacher at Hempstead, Hoskins has served as head coach for five high school football programs throughout his teaching career and has been an assistant head coach with three other high school programs.

This new role also brings a love of Hempstead football full circle. “As a 1977 Hempstead graduate, it is fair to say I have a passion for Mustang Football,” said Hoskins.

Steuer will graduate from Clarke University in May, where he is goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team. In his two-year career with the Crusaders, he had 204 saves with a save percentage of 71.3 percent. He posted four shutout wins in the 2014 season. He was a member of the Loras College men’s soccer team prior to attending Clarke. A Hempstead graduate, Steuer was a two-time first-team all-conference selection for the Mustangs. He is majoring in accounting.

Heaney will take the reins of the Rams boys soccer program after being assistant coach last season. He also served as head coach of the Rams JV team, winning more games than the previous two years combined. A graduate of Loras College, Heaney holds a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice and psychology. Professionally, Heaney is a benefits consultant with Blackmore Benefits Group, Inc.

Klein has been an assistant coach for the Hempstead girls cross country team since 1998 and has been an assistant track and field coach in charge of distance since 2005. In 1992, she began coaching eighth-grade girls basketball as well as seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls track and field at Jefferson Middle School. She competed as an intercollegiate athlete at Loras College on the cross country and track teams from 1985 to 1989. Klein holds a bachelor of arts degree in K-12 art education from Loras.
