The Dubuque Community School District Board of Education voted unanimously today to appoint Stan Rheingans as the district’s new superintendent of schools, effective immediately. Rheingans has served as the executive director of human resources for the district since 2004 and has been the interim superintendent since May.

“The Board is confident that Stan is the right person to lead the Dubuque Community Schools into the future,” said Mike Donohue, president of the School Board. “He is a well-respected leader and is committed to the district and the community. We are excited to begin the next chapter of excellence for the district with Stan at the helm.”

The son of two public school teachers, Rheingans assumes the superintendent position after a variety of roles in education. Most recently he served as executive director of human resources for the Dubuque Community Schools. In this role, he served as the main spokesperson in negotiations with the district’s bargaining units and served as the main human resources officer for the nearly 2,000 employees in the district.

“The last year has been a challenging one for the Dubuque Community School District and I believe we are now poised to achieve greatness,” said Rheingans. “Our success has always stemmed from the outstanding individuals who make up the district. It will be our challenge now to set the vision for the future of the district and unite as a team to achieve it.”

Before coming to Dubuque, he was principal at Junior/Senior High School in Wilton, Iowa. In this role, he oversaw all operations of the school including long-range staff development, recruitment and mentoring of teachers and other staff, and developed programs to increase student achievement. Prior to that, he was an associate principal and activities director in the Wilton School District and the dean of students at North Scott High School in Eldridge, Iowa.

In the classroom, Rheingans served as a social studies teacher at both North Scott and Freeport High School before moving into administration. A decorated military veteran, Rheingans served as a combat engineer platoon leader in the United States Army 10th Engineer Division in the Federal Republic of Germany and was a training and tactical operations officer in the First Armor Division in Operation Desert Storm. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star.

Rheingans holds a bachelor’s degree from Loras College, a master’s degree from the University of Iowa, and a certificate of advanced studies (superintendent’s license) from the University of Northern Iowa.
