Students often hear about the “Jaws of Life” vehicle-extraction tool being used as a response tool in severe accidents. Now, Hempstead High School students will have the chance to see the tool in action on Wednesday, April 1, at part of the school’s Spring Wind event.

The Dubuque Fire Department will demonstrate the extraction process twice on Wednesday (once beginning at 8:25 a.m. and again at 9:15 a.m.) in the parking lot by the school’s baseball field.

One of the cars being used for demonstration will carry a unique message with it – not only about safe driving, but also about other responsible decision making. It was seized from a drug dealer after being used repeatedly to facilitate illegal drug sales.

The event is part of Hempstead’s Spring Wind week. Now in its 45th year, the program was created to empower students and teachers through non-traditional learning experiences. It is a continuing tradition that aims to create a week of adventure, learning, and nonstop fun for members of the Hempstead community.
