Ann Johnson, a second-grade teacher at Sageville Elementary School was one of seven Iowa teachers recently named state finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Dubuque Senior High School and Hempstead High School will participate in this year’s Iowa College Application Campaign, a statewide program sponsored by the Iowa College Student Aid Commission. It is part of a national effort to encourage high school seniors to start the college application process.

A portable classroom from Kennedy Elementary School will hit the streets tomorrow morning, October 9, when it departs for its new home at Hoover Elementary. The move will begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow and is expected to last approximately two hours.

The Dubuque Community School District has selected the new volleyball and cheerleading coaches for Hempstead High School, pending approval by the Board of Education at its next meeting.
Travis Wills, assistant men’s volleyball coach at Clarke University, will assume the volleyball position and Shawna Auderer, the cheerleading assistant coach for the 2013-14 season, will become the head coach this year. The Dubuque Community School District is collaborating with eight of the largest school districts in Iowa to submit a waiver request to the United States Department of Education from the following requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, also referred to as No Child Left Behind (NCLB): School Choice, Supplemental Education Services (SES), and associated set-aside funds. Each year, Senior High School and Hempstead High School recognize the graduates who have achieved the highest academic rank in their class. The student with the highest rank is named the class valedictorian and the student with the second-highest rank is named the salutatorian.
For the Hempstead High School Class of 2014, the valedictorian is Jiwei Sun and the salutatorian is Christopher Lee Bechen. This Sunday, Hempstead will graduate 373 students this year at its graduation at 1 p.m. at the Five Flags Center.
For the Senior High School Class of 2014, the valedictorian is Kristen Savary and the salutatorian is Mitchell Steinhauser. Senior will graduate 375 students during its graduation ceremony on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Five Flags Center.
Valedictorians and salutatorians are determined based solely on a student’s grade-point-average as calculated by a weighted mathematical formula.

The 2013-14 Dubuque Community School District Teacher of the Year was named at the annual Educators’ Recognition Dinner on May 8, hosted by the school district and the Dubuque Education Association.
Kate Riepe, an English teacher at Hempstead High School, was selected for the honor. Outside of the classroom, she is also a theater director and speech coach at the school.

School Administrators of Iowa announced that David Olson, director of secondary education for the Dubuque Community School District, was named a finalist for the 2014 Iowa Central Office Administrator of the Year award.
