Excitement Lands at Hoover Elementary School

Dubuque Fire Engine 502 visits Hoover Elementary SchoolWhile yellow school buses are common, it’s not everyday a helicopter lands at school.

On Friday, Oct. 28, Mercy Medical Center – Dubuque’s AirCare 3 helicopter landed at Hoover Elementary School to the delight of students. The flight crew then talked to students about the helicopter and their work, with students having an opportunity to sit in the helicopter.Mercy Medical Center - Dubuque AirCare3 Visits Hoover Elementary School

The aircraft joined Engine Company 502 from the Dubuque Fire Department, which provided fire safety information and vehicle tours to students.

Preschool Spots Still Available

It is not too late to sign your child up for Iowa’s free four-year-old preschool in a Dubuque Community School District school or at a community partner preschool for the 2016-2017 school year.

To be eligible, students must be Iowa residents and must turn four years old on or before September 15, 2016.

The following district preschool classrooms still have openings: Audubon, Bryant, Fulton, Hoover, Irving, Lincoln, Prescott, Sageville, and Table Mound.

To enroll, visit any of these elementary schools or a community partner preschool. Students may attend preschool at any school and homeschool boundaries do not apply.

Sageville Teacher Honored by President Obama

Ann Johnson PhotoSageville Elementary School Math Teacher Ann Johnson was among 213 mathematics and science teachers honored by President Obama as recipients of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. These awardees represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity schools. Johnson, and the other educators honored, will receive their awards at a ceremony in Washington, DC on September 8.
