Pre-calculus students explore real-life trigonometry
Students in Amanda Goranson’s pre-calculus class at Dubuque Senior High School might have wondered if they would ever use trigonometry in real life. After a recent project created by the math teacher (and with the help of Dubuque photographer and Senior alum Garth Fuerste) they won’t question it any more.

Hempstead Student Named US Senate Youth Delegate
Jack Hostager, a senior at Hempstead High School, was recently named one of two delegates selected to represent the state of Iowa at the 53rd U.S. Senate Youth Program in Washington D.C. Hostager will participate in a week-long government and leadership education program in the nation’s capital and receive a one-time $5,000 college scholarship.

Presentation to Discuss Dangers of Synthetic Drugs
The Dubuque Community School District Health and Wellness Services Office will host a presentation on synthetic drugs tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Washington Middle School. Admission is free and the community is invited to attend.

2014 FIRST LEGO League Winners Announced
The 2014 FIRST LEGOLeague (FLL) regional event was held Saturday, December 6, at Roosevelt Middle School in Dubuque. The event is part of a global robotics competition that seeks to introduce students to problem-solving and research skills through robotics competitions on the state, regional and global levels.
In addition to hosting by the Dubuque Community School District, the program was supported by many Dubuque-area businesses who provided mentors and support throughout the season.
District to Host First ‘School Speak,’ Nov. 22
The Dubuque Community School District will host its first “School Speak” event at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the district’s administrative offices at 2300 Chaney Road.

Sageville teacher named state finalist for nation’s highest honor in math, science teaching

Ann Johnson, a second-grade teacher at Sageville Elementary School was one of seven Iowa teachers recently named state finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Dubuque High Schools to Participate in Iowa College Application Campaign
Dubuque Senior High School and Hempstead High School will participate in this year’s Iowa College Application Campaign, a statewide program sponsored by the Iowa College Student Aid Commission. It is part of a national effort to encourage high school seniors to start the college application process.

Portable Classroom Moving from Kennedy to Hoover, Oct. 9
A portable classroom from Kennedy Elementary School will hit the streets tomorrow morning, October 9, when it departs for its new home at Hoover Elementary. The move will begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow and is expected to last approximately two hours.

Hempstead/Senior Football Tickets On Sale Tomorrow Morning
Tickets for the football games between Hempstead High School and Senior High School on Friday, Sept. 19, will go on sale tomorrow (Friday) morning from 7:30-9 a.m. and then from 1 p.m. through game time at the main ticket booth at Dalzell Field.
