Mentor Position Description

Goal of the Position:

To develop relationships with youth that will promote students into becoming world-class learners and citizens of character.

Role:

The mentor’s role is to support their mentees by:

  • Empowering them to resolve current issues and to develop positive coping strategies for the future.
  • Provide a model for a healthy, trusting relationship through clear communication and setting
    appropriate boundaries.
  • Acknowledging their strengths, talents and gifts and encouraging them to find ways to use them.
  • Be an active listener and offer support and encouragement when appropriate.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain confidentiality of mentee.
  • Build a positive relationship.
  • Help set goals and work toward accomplishing them.
  • Take the lead in supporting a young person through ongoing, one on one relationship.

Qualifications:

  • Willingness to provide emotional, social, and practical support within limits.
  • Knowledge of one’s boundaries and ability to set limits with others.
  • Recognition that all people have strengths, and they need to discover and use them.
  • Complete non-employee background check, District Orientation and School Orientation.

Time Commitment:

  • Two hours a month (preferred half hour, each week) for the entire school year.
  • Mentoring must occur during school hours
