Eisenhower PTO Names Five-Star Award Winners
The Eisenhower Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) announced the winners of its annual Five-Star Awards at a school assembly on Friday, May 6. This award is given annually to one teacher and one support staff member at the school.

Dubuque Senior Instructor Named Teacher of the Year
The Dubuque Community School District Teacher of the Year was named at the annual Educators’ Recognition Dinner on May 5, hosted by the school district and the Dubuque Education Association.
Louie Fischer, an English teacher at Dubuque Senior High School, was selected for the honor. Fischer has taught at Senior since 2005. Outside the classroom, he is also the coach of Senior’s girls cross country team. “In his English classroom, student engagement is a specialty for Louie,” said one of his nominators. “Louie finds a variety of ways to tie literature and writing into students’ personal lives, thus making the learning relevant for students. Students look forward to attending his class every day.”

District Receives Financial Reporting Award
The Dubuque Community School District has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International for having met or exceeded the program’s high standards for financial reporting and accountability. The award is for the district’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ending in 2015.

Dubuque Senior Teacher Receives National Speech Award
Dubuque Senior High School Teacher Aaron Dean was one of 21 recipients nationwide to be awarded the 2015-16 Outstanding Speech, Debate and Theatre Educator Awards from the National Federation of High School Speech, Debate and Theatre Association.

Dubuque Middle School Track Meets Postponed, Saturday, April 30
Two Dubuque Community School District middle school track meets scheduled for Saturday, April 30, have been postponed due to the forecast for inclement weather.
The Jefferson Middle School Girls Invitational Track Meet scheduled for 9 a.m. and the Roosevelt Middle School Boys Invitational Track Meet scheduled for 12:30 p.m., both at Dalzell Field, have been postponed.
A make-up date has not been determined.

Johll to Become Next Roosevelt Middle School Principal
The Dubuque Community School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeff Johll as the new principal of Roosevelt Middle School beginning in the 2016-2017 school year, pending approval by the Board of Education at its April 11 meeting. An experienced educational administrator, Johll has served as assistant principal at Roosevelt since 2005.
As principal of Roosevelt, Johll will be responsible for the strategic and day-to-day operations of the school, which serves approximately 1,160 students and 145 professional and support staff.

2016 Kindergarten Welcome Events
Preparing for kindergarten is an exciting time for children and parents alike. To help ease the transition, many schools in the Dubuque Community School District will host a Kindergarten Welcome Events/Open House to allow students and families get acquainted with their school and its staff in preparation for the 2016-17 school year.
At the event, attendees will meet the school’s kindergarten teachers, the school principal and other school staff. There will be an overview of the school as well as overview of the registration process.
